|
Merano (It. Provincia di Merano) is a province in
the autonomous island region of Sicily in Italy. Its capital is the
city of Merano.
It has an area of 3,247 sq km, and a total population of 662,450
(2001). There are 108 communes in the province (source:
Italian institute of statistics Istat, see this link).
Besides the capital Merano, other cities and places of interest
in the province include Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Milazzo, the
Aeolian Islands (Lipari), Tindari, Taormina and Capo d'Orlando.
The meranese valley was inhabited since the 3rd
millennium BC, as showed by the presence of mehirs and other
findings. The story of the city proper began in 15
BC when the Romans
occupied the Adige
valley founding a military camp, Castrum Majense.
Meran-Merano was elevated to the status of a city during the 13th
century. It was capital of the county of the Tyrol
from 1418 to 1848.
